Cricket's three formats and Bangladesh's favourite tournaments

T20 is the most popular format for betting among cricket fans in Bangladesh. A match wraps up in a few hours, the situation changes every over, and the markets update quickly. BPL and IPL are the two biggest tournaments in this format, featuring the best cricketers in the world.

In ODI matches, teams play a different strategy over fifty overs. Betting markets for the first powerplay, middle overs and death overs are more detailed in ODIs. The run range is larger than in T20, so the over/under market calculations also differ.

Test cricket is a five-day game of patience. A draw is a valid result here, so there are three options in the market — Team A wins, Team B wins, or draw. T20 and ODI do not have this third option. In international Tests, Bangladesh Tigers matches always get special attention from fans at home.

Markets are available on 7bdt for the ICC T20 World Cup and various international series. Football betting is also available alongside cricket — that is covered separately below.

The difference in betting on football and other sports

While cricket offers dozens of separate markets in a single match — runs, wickets, partnerships — football focuses on goals and match results. The 1X2 market (home win / draw / away win) is the most familiar in football, whereas T20 and ODI cricket generally determine a winner directly between two sides.

Half-time score, total goals (over/under 2.5) and both teams to score are popular markets in football. The cricket equivalent would be first innings lead or target-related markets. The type of sport differs, but the way odds work is the same — decimal, fractional or American.

For those interested in playing in a virtual format beyond cricket, 7bdt has a separate virtual sports betting section — where you can bet on simulated matches at any time. Full details can be found on that page.

Popular betting markets and examples

A single cricket match has many separate markets. Below are the most commonly used markets with a general example for each.

Match Winner

Choose which of the two teams will win. The simplest and most popular market in T20 and ODI — Team A or Team B.

Outright Winner

Toss Betting

Predict which team will win the toss before the match starts. Since this has no direct link to the match result, the odds for both teams are usually close.

Pre-match

Top Batsman

Pick which batsman will score the most runs in the whole match or in a specific innings. More attention is placed on the in-form batsman in the team.

Player-based

Total Runs Over/Under

Whether the total runs in an innings or the full match will be above a set number (over) or below it (under) — runs, not wickets, are what matter in this market.

Runs-based

First Wicket Partnership

An over/under market on how many runs the batting team's first two batsmen will put on together — it settles quickly since the result is decided early in the innings.

Innings-opening

Multi Bet

Combine several markets into a single bet. If all selections are correct, you receive a return at the combined odds — if even one is wrong, the whole bet is lost. See the odds section below for an example.

How to read and understand odds

Odds on a betting site can be shown in three different formats — decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same information in different ways. 7bdt generally uses decimal format, which is straightforward to understand.

Format Team A win odds Team B win odds
Decimal 2.25 1.50
Fractional 5/4 1/2
American +125 -200

Example 1 — Team A (underdog): Say you place a ৳200 bet on Team A to win. Decimal odds 2.25, fractional 5/4, American +125 — all three are the same. If Team A wins, you get back ৳450 (৳250 profit + ৳200 stake). If Team A loses, the ৳200 is gone.

Example 2 — Team B (favourite): Team B's odds are 1.50 in decimal, 1/2 in fractional, -200 in American. A negative American odds figure means you need to stake that amount to win 100 — so staking 200 returns 100 profit. If Team B wins, a ৳200 stake returns a total of ৳300 (৳100 profit).

Multi bet example: Three selections — decimal 1.40, 1.60 and 1.80 — combined give odds of 1.40 × 1.60 × 1.80 = 4.03 (approximately). On a ৳100 bet, if all three selections are correct, you get back ৳403. If any one of them is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost.

Live Betting — odds shift with wickets and overs

In-Play

You can place bets even after the match has started — this is called in-play or live betting. In cricket it is especially interesting, because after every wicket and every over the picture of the match changes, and the odds change along with it.

Team A Match Winner
2.10
Dropped after wicket fall
Team B Match Winner
1.75
Risen as runs increased
Total Runs Over/Under
Variable
Updated over by over

Say Team A is 80 for 3 after 12 overs. In this situation Team A's chances of winning drop slightly, so their odds will rise and Team B's odds will fall. But if Team A plays a big over next, the picture reverses.

12/50 overs
In-play odds active

In live betting, new opportunities appear at every moment — when the powerplay ends, when the scoring rate slows in the middle overs, or when wickets fall in the last five overs. Keep in mind that live betting moves fast and odds can change in an instant.

Some practical tips before you start betting

  • Understand the match format: T20, ODI and Test play differently — and the markets differ too. Start with the format you know best.
  • Focus on one or two markets: For beginners, it is better to start with straightforward markets like match winner or total runs. Betting on too many markets at once makes it hard to keep track.
  • Set a budget: Cricket betting is for entertainment — decide in advance how much you will spend per match and stay within that limit.
  • Do not rush in live betting: In-play odds change fast. Watching how much the odds move after a wicket or boundary for a short while gives you a better sense of things.
  • Play responsibly: Set your own limits on time and money spent on betting. Read 7bdt's responsible gaming guidelines for more details.
  • Know the rules and conditions: Market-specific rules, what happens if a match is abandoned due to rain, or how the D/L method affects a result — all of this is clearly set out in the terms and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

All three formats have core markets like match winner, top batsman and total runs, but Test has a draw as an extra outcome so there are three options. In-play odds change fastest in T20 because the match is shorter.

If the match is completely abandoned, the stake is generally refunded. If a result is determined by the D/L method, bets are settled on that result. The specific rules are stated in 7bdt's terms and conditions.

You can combine two or more selections together in a single bet. The more selections you add, the higher the combined odds — but all of them need to be correct. The multi-bet example above shows a calculation with three selections.

In cricket, odds can update after every ball or wicket. In T20, odds can shift even after a big six. Before confirming your bet, check the odds shown on screen carefully, because if they change before you confirm, the new odds are usually displayed.

Markets are available for the ICC T20 World Cup, various bilateral series, and other international tournaments. You can see the available matches directly in the cricket section on 7bdt.
